About the Journalists Held in North Korea
As a South Korean citizen living in the U.S., I find all of this very interesting; the Internet is buzzing about the two journalists held in labor camps in North Korea right now.
First off, I cannot believe I need to mention this, but some people don't know that South and North Korea are different countries. I was extremely shocked when I saw, on comments of news articles about the two journalists, people bashing "Koreans" and "Korea." It makes me even scared that the Korean-American community in the U.S., made up completely of South Koreans and their descendents, would be negatively affected by all of this lack of knowledge. I was asked several times on different occasions whether I am from North or South Korea, and not jokingly, either. People are uninformed.
Also, I was horrified to find on another comment someone crying out to the U.S. just to drop a nuclear bomb on North Korea. It made me reconsider how informed everyone really is. There are several problems with just dropping a couple of bombs in North Korea:
1. North Korea is small. A nuclear war against North Korea will affect South Koreans, the Chinese, and perhaps even the Japanese.
2. One has to remember that mass destruction is never the answer. Of course, the nuclear bombings of Japan finally resulted in its surrender in WWII and (thank God) liberated Korea, and for this I am glad. However, it did not have to happen that way. There could have been another way to end the war without killing off numerous innocent civilians.
3. Countless people in South Korea still have relatives they never forgot about living in North Korea. Except in the cases of government-funded reunions at the border, they are not allowed to meet each other. I know I made the point already that South and North Korea are different nations, but it does not mean that the people are different people. No particular race or nationality is inherently evil, and as far as I know, many South Koreans and North Koreans continue to feel that they are one family, one group of people. We look the same, we speak the same language (although with different accents,) and less than a century ago, we were one country. South Korean elementary students, at school, are taught songs about peaceful reunification with North Korea. I observed that other countries, such as the U.S. and France, are the ones that make North Korea appear downright evil and so different from everyone else.
I am not North Korean. I've never been to North Korea, and my family doesn't even have relatives in North Korea. But as one of the young people who learned that song about reunification with North Korea, no, I don't want everyone in North Korea to die at the nuclear bombs dropped by the U.S.

P.S.: Does anyone else find it interesting that the South/North Korea reunification song is actually the Korean liberation-from-the-Japanese song, just the word 'liberation' replaced by 'reunification'?

I know I haven't blogged in a while...
And let me explain myself.
I went to San Diego with my sister and took a whole crapload of pictures, and I wanted to do a photoblog. I just never got to it, and it didn't seem right to blog before I did that. But now I realize it's pretty late anyway, I'll just get to it when I can. lol
Right now I'm pretty depressed. I woke up at 1:05 PM today (Sunday), and my mom is really mad at me, as if she wasn't already mad at me for what happened yesterday (I refused to go somewhere with her, and to make it worse, my sister did, too). And on top of all that I have big papers to write by tonight...and my mom, sister, and brother all left to somewhere (probably to LA) and my dad's in the backyard and I'm feeling sore from sleeping too long. Gah.
I'm hungry, too, but there's nothing to eat in this house unless one wants to cook, which is something I don't really feel like doing right now.
I know I sound like a lazy bum here, and well, I think I kind of deserve to be, seeing that I literally threw down the last two, three weekends for the family, moving furniture and designing flyers until 4 in the morning.
But apparently my mom doesn't think so.

2009 = Best Year of My LIFE. So far.
It may be too early to say anything about the year in whole, but so far, this is the best year of my LIFE! Things have been going so well, I'm afraid I might someday wake up from this dream.
I now know that I've been accepted to UC Berkeley (and UCLA& UCSD) for junior year this fall, and now I'm finally at peace. (:
And today:
1. My mom came back from Korea!
2. ...with 3 pairs of rad glasses for me, and also a pair of sunglasses from my aunt!
3. ...and a brand new digital camera for me! :)
4. My friend Michael got me my favorite candies& the blank audio CD's I needed for designing a logo for his podcast.
5. My Shakespeare class, my ONLY night class that goes until 10:10 p.m., got cancelled for the first time!
Now, of course, I should be working on my lit paper, but I just had to blog. Hehe!
And this weekend I'm going to San Diego with my sister for UCSD admit day...I'm so psyched, now that I can burn music CDs for the trip and have a camera to take pictures. :) Wish me luck in convincing mom to let us stay for Saturday night and go to Sea World for Sunday...unlikely, I know, but pray for me!
Now back to my essay! :D
